Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air Review

The Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air infant car seat a safety standout, affordable infant car seat for your baby. It fits babies 4 – 35 lbs and is easy to install.

This is a comfortable car seat and with a quality build, is not too heavy, and scores well for overall. It fits smaller infants and preemies well due to its infant inserts and lower bottom harness slots. Additionally, the Safety 1st boasts a large shell and 17% more leg room. There’s no proof to back this up, but the car seat does look bigger than other infant car seats. Your baby will be able to use the onBoard 35 Air longer than some other infant carriers especially if they get to 32” in height before 35lbs as is the case for most infants.

While it may not have all the bells and whistles that higher priced car seats have, this cheap car seat managed to hold its own with more expensive car seats. Impressive! Parents are going to love this car seat.

The Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air is a cheap car seat that outperforms other plenty of other more expensive car seats on the market today. This makes it a brilliant choice for parents on a tight budget, with its only downside being that it has limited stroller options compared to more expensive infant car seats such as the Chicco Keyfit 30 and the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35.

It is important to note that all the seats for sale in the US offer a basic level of protection by meeting the requirements of the standard.

  • Rear-faces from 4-35 pounds and up to 32” in height
  • Features Air Protect® Side Impact Protection meant to protect your child’s head
  • Carry Curve™ Handle with padded grip for additional comfort for easy carrying
  • Infant insert to keep smaller babies and preemies cozy.
  • Additional leg room for your baby’s comfort
  • Machine washable car seat pad
  • 5 recline positions so that the base achieves best fit
  • 4 harness heights and 3 buckle locations to accommodate your growing child
  • Storage compartment for LATCH

One Standout feature is the Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air’s “Air Protect”. This feature acts as an air cushion meant to protect your baby in the event of a side collision. They absorb energy and limit compression on the cushions by allowing the air to gradually escape. They are used on the sides and replace EPS or EPP foam that’s common in many other car seats. The rest of the area around and behind the head is covered in EPS foam.

The Safety 1st onBoard is comfortable seat, made out of soft fabric and comes with additional infant inserts

The padding on the Safety 1st isn’t the highest quality, but still feels nice. The fabric is also soft to the touch. The car seat shell is of a decent quality, as is the finish. Everything speaks to a car seat in this price range.

The handle has a rubber grip on its center that makes it comfortable to hold, and can be locked in any position, and an indicator tells you when the handle has been locked.

The Safety 1st has a large, average looking canopy that does not get in the way of the handle.

The Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air’s weight is average (9.46lbs), and is in line with other top infant car seats that we tested.

The Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air weighs 9.46lb, which is the infant car seat average (Not too heavy and neither is it too light)

While a car seat’s weight is a factor you should consider when picking a car seat, it should not be the number 1 thing you consider. Just because a car seat is light does not mean that it is the best car seat for your baby.

The weight of a car seat should only be a deciding factor whrn being used to settle a tie breaker between two or more good car seats based on other factors like features, ease of installation etc.
However, buying a stroller (frame stroller or a compatible standard stroller) can gived you something to attach the carrier to so you don’t have to carry it by hand thus giving you an easy time.

Stroller Compatibility

One downside of this car seat is its limited stroller compatibility, it does not work with many strollers and does not work with any of the strollers listed in our best baby stroller reviews.

The Safety 1st is compatible with some strollers such as the Safety 1st Aerolite Deluxe Stroller, and the Safety 1st Clic It Universal Infant Car Seat Carrier. View the list of best rated strollers and infant carriers.

Best Applications

The Safety 1st 35 Air is perfect for parents looking for a comfortable, high quality car seat that does not break the bank.

It certainly does not sport all the bells and whistles the more expensive, high-end car seats have, but parents can trust this car seat not to disappoint.

This car seat offers parents and infants proper value. While it may not be decked out with all the bells and whistles that parents love so much, the onBoard 35 manages to score above average, while still being cheap car seat.

While this is not the cheapest seat in the review, it is one of the cheaper car seats with so much more to offer compared to other cheaper or equally priced car seats. Given that well performing infant car seats cost between $200 and sometimes even $300, this car seat is a breath of fresh air.

The Cozy Greens back seat mirror

We recommend the Cozy Greens Back Seat Mirror as an accessory for your infant car seat. This nifty mirror keeps your baby entertained, and helps you keep an eye on them while they’re in their seat.

The surface of the mirror is shatterproof and provides wider viewing angles owing to its convex shape. According to Amazon reviews, this is the best car seat mirror compared to other options offered due to its clear reflection.

The mirror has a flat base which means it can be secured against the front of the rear headrest by using the horizontal and vertical straps & tightened to ensure it stays in place. Unfortunately, for the vertical straps to be fastened on the headrest, it needs to be an adjustable headrest.

The Safety 1st onBoard 35 Air comes standard with a positional infant head pillow and bolsters

This is a fantastic car seat. Parents get a very good car seat that doesn’t cost as much as most infant car seats. While it might not have all the bells and whistles the higher rated, more expensive infant car seats on our list, it has enough to give them a run for their money.

It has a high upper weight limit of 35lbs, a longer carrier, is easy to use & install, and is Side Impact Protection tested.

This car seat is a great choice for parents on a budget, or those looking for a secondary car seat. Many parents will be happy with this car seat.

The downside of this car seat is that it has limited stroller compatibility options compared to other infant car seats such as the Peg Perego or the Chicco Keyfit 30. Not a deal breaker, however. We believe that this shouldn’t be a major factor unless you cannot choose between two or more car seats.

Stroller Compatibility

The Graco Snugride Click Connect 35 LX infant car seats are compatible with all Graco Click Connect strollers.  The car seat will easily click into the compatible Graco strollers to create a travel system for your baby.

The Graco SnugRider Elite is a great choice for a lightweight snap-n-go stroller.

The Graco Ready2Grow or the Graco Fastaction Fold Duo Click Connect are double strollers that accept two Graco SnugRide Click Connect car seats

What we like about the Graco Snugride 35LX Infant Car Seat

The Graco has an adjustable crotch strap, measuring 5.5″ and 7″. This two position strap helps keep your baby safe without the crotch strap being too far or too close to them. There aren’t any guidelines as to when’s the best time to adjust the crotch strap, but the buckle should be as close to your baby as possible.

The Graco snugride 35LX has a no re-thread harness that’s adjustable by pushing the two buttons at the back of the car seat together, then sliding it to the right position.

The Graco has an infant insert that is great for smaller babies. It does a fantastic job of keeping your baby comfortable and in the right position. This insert can be used up to 12 lbs

The 35LX also has an adjustable recline foot which allows it to to be correctly reclined in a wide array of vehicles.

The multi-age level indicator on the base allows your baby (under 3 months) to seat in a more reclined position and avoid head slump or to sit more upright (3 months+).  This nifty addition means older babies can sit up more and look outside, and the younger ones can be correctly positioned.

Seat belt lock-off on car seat’s base helps to ease installation by allowing the seat belt to be locked using the base, rather than locking it in any other way.

Installation of this car seat is a breeze, more so if you read your car seat’s instruction manual. The Graco Snugride 35 LX makes installation easy whether you install using LATCH or the seatbelt. Please note that you can only use one of these methods, never both.

Finding the correct recline angle in your vehicle.

Finding the right angle to install your car seat is dependent on the slope of your car’s back seat cushion. The SR35 LX has 6 recline positions. Use the red knob to switch between different positions.

Base installation using lower LATCH anchors:

To install the base using LATCH, ensure the base is in the right recline angle before you begin. Connect the hooks to your vehicle’s lower anchors, and check so that the LATCH straps are not twisted. Route the end of the LATCH strap through the belt path till the centre of the base. Finally, pull to tighten. The LATCH strap then goes over the closed lock off.

Installation with Base

The Graco SnugRide Click Connect 35 LX can be installed with either seat belt or LATCH.

To install via LATCH, thread the straps through the belt path over the seat belt lock off, then connect the push button connectors to the vehicle anchors and tighten.

Seat belt installation is easy because the car seat base has a belt lock-off.

Base installation using seat belt.

The Graco base can be installed quickly and easily with a seat belt owing to its lock-off device. Using the lock-off is required if installing this base with seatbelt.

This video will help you install this seat quickly and correctly using LATCH or the seat belt.

Installation without the base

The Graco SnugRide Click Connect 35 LX can be installed safely without its base, like most other infant car seats. This is particularly helpful if you need to occasionally switch between cars, or if you’re traveling by taxi or plane. So there’s no need to lug the base around.

To install, level the car seat on the vehicle seat and route the safety belt through the belt path guides on the car seat. Lock the seat belt, and tighten the car seat by pressing your weight against it.

This model doesn’t allow Euro routing (where the shoulder belt routes behind the car seat) unlike other infant car seats.

Fit to Child

The Graco Snugride fits most newborns and even preemies very well due to low bottom harness slots, the inner buckle position and the adjustable crotch strap length.

The insert is helpful for smaller babies and preemies, but should be removed once the baby weighs 12 lbs.

Care and Maintenance

The Graco Snugride has a machine-washable seat cushion and canopy. Spot clean the harness and clean the buckle with a damp cloth.

Cleaning the harness buckle

Remove the buckle from the car seat. Hold the buckle upside down and submerge it in warm water. Jimmy the buckle by pushing the red button a few times while the buckle us still submerged.

Do not immerse that harness webbing in water, and do not use soap fot this step. Only use warm water to rinse the harness buckle. When done with this, take the buckle out of the water, shake out any excess water and air dry it.

You’re all set. Reattach the harness buckle and check if the harness is correctly installed.

These aren’t really problems but here goes…

  • This is not a compact infant seat. It is a large car seat that takes up a lot of space in the back seat. Keep your receipt and the box handy until you’re certain that this car seat is a right fit.
  • Lacks premium push-on LATCH connectors
  • Not exactly lightweight but 10 lbs. is OK for an infant car seat of this size.
  • The harness straps can’t be removed or replaced.
  • Not compatible with older Graco strollers
  • The Graco is China-made – So are many other car seats in all fairness.

Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat Review.

Consumer Reports recently rated the Chicco (Pronounced Kee-Koh) Keyfit and the Keyfit 30 as the best infant car seat over all the car seat models tested. And rightfully so! The Chicco Keyfit is a fantastic infant car seat.

What we like about the Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat

The Chicco Keyfit is probably the easiest car seat to install. With a leveling foot to adjust to the angle of your car seat for an accurate fit, a bubble-level Indicators show that a proper base angle has been achieved, and a one pull harness adjustment, installing the Chicco is a cinch!

Installation using LATCH

With  LATCH, simply attach the anchors to the vehicles hooks, then tighten the five-point harness easily using the one-pull harness adjustment. Make the install tighter by you push the car seat towards the car’s seat. A bubble level indicator exists to show you when a proper angle has been achieved.

How to install the Chicco car seat base using LATCH

How to secure the Chicco into the car seat base

How to install the Chicco KeyFit using the Shoulder/Lap Belt

How to install a car seat without its base

Installing the KeyFit using the seat belt is pretty easy too. The belt paths are easily marked and have lock-offs to secure the base in place.

Fit to Child

The Chicco Keyfit has a minimum weight limit of 4 lb and  a 7″ bottom harness position. This makes this car seat an excellent choice  for smaller babies and preemies, as well as average size new-born babies.

This car seat also has a maximum weight limit of 30 lbs, and a maximum height limit of 30″ (either that or your baby’s head 1″ from the top of the car seat shell). This means that your baby will not outgrow their car seat as quickly.

The KeyFit 30 has three harness height slots so you can choose the right height to keep the harness at or below baby’s shoulders.

Infant Insert

The seat includes an infant insert that can help even the smallest babies achieve a proper fit. This insert must however be removed when baby weighs 11 lbs.

A recurring pet peeve that most parents have with the Chicco Keyfit infant car seat is the canopy.

The Canopy

The Chicco Keyfit’s canopy has been a pet peeve for many parents. We have since learned that the Chicco has a number of canopy options. Put simply, there are 4 types of Chicco Keyfit 30 canopies.

Here is the Chicco Keyfit’s canopy breakdown.

  1. The sporty canopy- Does not shade too well. Is the source of many a frustrated parent. Also note: Many parents have no issues with this car seat. Models in this range are the aster, veranda, radius, glacial, snapdragon, midori, graphica, romantic, Sedona, minerale, surge and the pulse.
  2. The magic canopy- Has a zipper in the back. When opened, you can extend the canopy using a mesh opeing. This provides a sufficient decent shade. Models in this range are coal, avena and solare
  3.  3-panel canopy – Provides fantastic shade. Is however difficult to identify. One sure fire way to know is if the car seat comes with an accompanying BRAVO stroller system. This provides more protection from the sun than all the models listed above. The models are orchid, papyrus, Polaris, empire, lilla and Silverspring
  4. ZIP canopies – Aren’t too different. They provide ample shade and the only difference is their style than anything else. These models are emerald, obsidian.

The big problem is that these car seats are sold as the same product, but they differ slightly. Hopefully we have cleared up the Chicco Keyfit’s canopy confusion.

Chicco keyfit 30 Car Seat Expiration date

The Chicco Keyfit Infant Car Seat has a 6-year lifespan. This means that if our used car seat list checks out (insert link here), the car seat can be handed down.

To find your car seat’s expiry date, check the sticker label on the top of the base, or on the bottom of the car seat itself. NB: Sometimes, the date of manufacture of the car seat base and the actual car seat may sometimes differ.

Care and Maintenance

Clean the car seat’s fabrics with mild soap and water. You may machine wash these fabrics in cold water on the delicate cycle, using mild detergent only. Do not use any bleach.

To remove the seat cover, consult your car seat’s manual. To clean the harness, wash it with a damp cloth just on the surface. Never remove the car seat harness/harness components from the car seat.

If the car seat harness/straps are too dirty, they should be replaced immediately. Refer to our guide on how to clean a car seat

There isn’t much not to like about this infant car seat.

  1. Is heavy – Add that to your child getting older and carrying them around may turn out to be a real task.
  2. Bulky – Will be hard to fit 3 car seats across in the your vehicles back seat due to its size.

The Bottom Line

The Chicco Keyfit is an excellent car seat and definitely one of the best infant car seat options available on the market right now. Give it a shot!
